Chapter IV I stood out in the middle of the nip air that brought a sniff when I smelled too deeply and then I looked up and saw a shaded moon crossing in journey behind silver gray clouds closing out star light beams so that their waiting became a part of my eternal distance, I knew that summer had gone leaving its colors hanging in autumn trees waiting for the fading brightness of its last mornings. The feeling of aproaching winter was heard again in whistling wind and seen in big eyes poping out of heavy sweaters. All I can remember about kindergarden is that I talked my mother and father into leting me quit after a couple of mounths of swinging around on the monkey bars and walking home with all the other little children that really were kids bumping into each other with all their bottled up nervous energy that had been pushed back into them throughout the morning in a wooden heat room that grabbed the sweat and threw it back at you after climbing of the bars that really made us monkeys. There was a drugstore that really was a candy store across the street from Lincoln school and an Italian man named Cantaloupe ran it. He had a son who was the type that would be tall and skinny at every age and we used to say, hey Cantaloupe I like watermellon better. It was kind of nice that old Mister Cantaloupe never changed his name. With a name like that it must have taken guts to live in Mount Lebanon. There was always a Rumor going around that Mister Cantaloupe was a bookie. If he was, that would be the reason he never changed his name. A bunch of old guys hung around the corner in front of his store and I would look at them walking by and wonder at their strangeness. They would dress in shaggy baggy cloths and always be laughing out loud like a bunch of kids. Tid bits and candy I would hold up to my noise keeping the crappy smell of the street
