highschool, where were we Daniel? We never even spoke. What were you doing? Reading all the time? Turning kids on to far out books. So what? O, I don't know, maybe that's the way things become so in your mind. I chose the physical. I wanted to feel the fight. I wanted to see the pain and the lies directly in front of my eyes. Everything is so fucking mundane. I have gone way into the past, and I am still there. My conscience won't let me walk out of it. The classic is my friend. Jack London almost seems to begin where I end. That how far back I am. Running a spekeasy or booking numbers may be outdated, but it brings the fire and keeps it burning. All the fighting. I know where they lead, but fuck it. Power and love is the world. I'm not a part of the world, but I demand its intensity. Look into my eyes Daniel. I am a sacred flower, and most of the time I am afraid the stem is going to snap. But it is that very feeling that drives me on. The fine line of Hell. I believe in Hell, and I am walking on its flames. Believe me, there is nothing to stop the smell of my soul when it burns. No, it is not true. The look in your face. My heart does see further. It leaps ahead. That is why I am alive. But it also yearns for now. For the present, and the present is the winding alley, and Martin P., my father's right hand man. He carries an ice pick that has taught people more than they could have ever found in a book. The chase is on, and I am not quiting. But someday I'll touch it all in a dream and then I'll look back smiling at the alley. Christ I have talked alot. Well Daniel, what's the next step for my weary soul? Daniel, I mean that in a funny way. It looks like all the way into it. I don't know Michael. There's no direction. We only find ourselves in the place we are. You see the steps you're on, but it looks like you're walking down. I don't know how far you have to go. I hope its not too far. It gets scarey down there. I've journied down the stairs too. Yeah, he said with a sigh. The journey of the mind. The mind that demands inclosure. Its a quiet journey,

Michael tells Daniel that fighting and gambling sustain the intensity he wants and asks where his weary soul should go. Daniel describes his own descent through the mind and admits he cannot offer a direction.

Michael identifies with Jack London and calls himself a sacred flower whose stem might snap. He connects present danger to Martin P.'s ice pick and tells Daniel that fear drives him. Daniel answers with his own journey down the stairs of the mind, sharing Michael's sense of descent.

Michael contrasts Daniel's high school life of 'Reading all the time' with his own choice: 'I chose the physical. I wanted to feel the fight', calls himself 'a sacred flower' afraid 'the stem is going to snap', and says 'I believe in Hell, and I am walking on its flames', with his present embodied by 'Martin P., my father's right hand man' and his ice pick. Daniel answers that 'There's no direction', that it 'looks like you're walking down', and that he has 'journied down the stairs too' on 'The journey of the mind.'

The page reads like a manifesto of intensity, in which fear itself is 'that very feeling that drives me on'. Daniel does not argue but offers a parallel descent, suggesting that the bookish path and the violent path both lead into darkness. A handwritten query above 'sacred' offering scared as an alternative fits the speech, which keeps sliding between holiness and fear.
